Bill Gugliotta
Director of Photography, The Plain Dealer

Bill Gugliotta is director of photography at The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, Ohio, where he’s worked since 1998. Under his direction, The Plain Dealer photography staff has been named “Best in Ohio” six years in a row and
has captured Ohio News Photographer of the Year honors five times. The Plain Dealer staff has been honored for both photography and editing in the Pictures of the Year International and Best of Photojournalism contests, as well as the Society for News Design.
Although he was a Pittsburgher for 16 years while working at The Pittsburgh Press and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Gugliotta has found Cleveland to be a great place to work for the past eight years -- although it’s definitely not a good idea to root for the Steelers anymore.
While at The Pittsburgh Press, Gugliotta worked with an extraordinary team of photographers and editors that helped set the standard for newspaper photojournalism at the time. Without any formal training in photography, he became the newspaper’s first picture editor and also designed Page 1. At night, he attended the University of Pittsburgh and earned his bachelor’s degree.

After a long labor strike in 1992 that eventually killed The Press, Gugliotta was hired by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as associate editor / photography. Three years later, he left Pittsburgh to become director of photography at The State in Columbia, S.C.

Gugliotta is a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and began his journalism career while serving in the U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C. When he left the service, Gugliotta joined The Journal Newspapers in Northern Virginia where he was a news editor and designer for five years before joining the Minneapolis Star.

Gugliotta teaches photojournalism at Cleveland State University and has been a Kalish Workshop faculty member for three years.
