Boyzell Hosey

Senior Editor for Visual Storytelling

Boyzell Hosey is the senior editor for visual storytelling at ProPublica. During his 24-year career at the Tampa Bay Times, he was the deputy editor and director of photography. Under his leadership, his staff celebrated multiple visual journalism awards and contributed to high-profile projects, including five Pulitzer Prizes, between 2014 and 2022.

Under his leadership at ProPublica, the visual editing team was awarded the National Picture Editing Team of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association’s Best of Photojournalism competition and honored with multiple awards throughout the competition.
These projects include partnerships with the film team and independent photographers.

Widely known in the profession for fostering and promoting visual journalism talent and committing to diversity efforts, Boyzell was bestowed the NPPA Honors Leadership Award in 2023. He is a board member of the University of Florida Journalism Advisory Council, the National Press Photographers Association, and the Pinellas County Schools Journeys in Journalism.

Boyzell’s community connections and civic engagement impacting a diverse spectrum of adults and youth run deep in the Tampa Bay area. He is co-founder of the Tampa Bay Collard Green Festival, an annual nonprofit event designed to inspire the community to live healthier through the foods we love to grow and eat. Its focus on urban agriculture, culinary experiences, fitness, and family fun is also a storytelling catalyst to the festival's success.

Boyzell and his wife Andrida, a retired theater arts middle school instructor, received The Studio@620 Community Impact Award, and in 2024 they were awarded the Gwen Reese Lifetime Achievement award for their contributions to the St. Petersburg community.
