Sarah was a staff photographer at The Washington Post for nearly 30 years, until the newspaper eliminated its staff photographer positions in 2026. During her tenure, she also spent five years rotating into a weekend photo editing role.
Throughout her career, she has focused extensively on Latin America, the Caribbean, and immigration in the United States, earning numerous honors from leading photography organizations. Her awards include the Robert F. Kennedy Award for International Photography, the John Faber Award from the Overseas Press Club, the National Press Photographers Association’s “New America Award,” and multiple honors from the White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA), among others.
She is the co-founder and co-director of Women Photojournalists of Washington (WPOW) and has served as a faculty member and portfolio reviewer at premier photography programs, including the Missouri Photo Workshop, The Truth With a Camera Workshop, the Northern Short Course, and the annual WPOW Seminar and Portfolio Review.
She holds a bachelor’s degree from Hampshire College and a master’s degree from the University of Missouri–Columbia.
