Jan M. Carroll
Partner, Barnes & Thornburg LLO

Jan M. Carroll concentrates her practice on civil litigation.

Before joining BARNES & THORNBURG in 1986, Jan spent eleven years
with The Associated Press as a writer and editor in its bureaus in Dallas and Indianapolis. During her tenure in Indianapolis, she covered nine sessions of the Indiana General Assembly (including those in which the Indiana public access laws were debated and enacted).
Drawing on her journalism background, Jan represents media organizations seeking access to public records and meetings, resisting subpoenas for unpublished journalistic material (photographs, story drafts, and notes), and defending against
defamation and newsgathering-related claims.

For the past twenty years, she has written the Indiana section of the Media Law Resource Center’s annual update on defamation law, and has been responsible for the Indiana section of Tapping Officials’ Secrets, a compendium of public access laws published by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. For many years, Jan has been recognized by BEST LAWYERS IN AMERICA in the category of First Amendment law, and by LAW & POLITICS as one of Indiana’s ‘Super Lawyers’ in business litigation.
