The Kalish Board of Directors is seeking our next director to help us transform into an organization that supports visual editors throughout their careers. This is a newly defined role for the workshop, aimed in long-term growth in programming and financial stability.

Position Overview
The Executive Director will have a deep appreciation for the longevity of The Kalish workshop, a commitment to continuing its mission, and a deep understanding and appreciation of visual journalism.
The Executive Director of The Kalish will play a pivotal role in managing the operations of our volunteer-led organization, raising funds, and working in partnership with the advisory board to ensure that The Kalish mission and strategic goals are achieved.
The Executive Director will be responsible for writing grants, identifying partners to create new funding opportunities, and maintaining and developing partnerships to expand the workshop’s financial capacity.
This role also involves overseeing the annual visual editing workshop and managing various organizational functions to maintain the smooth operation of The Kalish. We are interested in developing additional programming throughout the year to increase our outreach for the workshop while supporting the visual journalism community.
Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Management:

Collaborate with the advisory board to steer the organization and implement strategic plans.

Manage operations and ensure alignment with The Kalish mission and goals.

Workshop Coordination:

Plan and execute the annual workshop (beginning with the June 2026 workshop), working with host site administrators, faculty, board, volunteers, travel details/expenses, and participants.

Coordinate logistics with RIT housing staffing and faculty to ensure smooth participant accommodation and workshop execution.

In collaboration with the board, develop and maintain an updated curriculum and faculty roster that aligns with industry needs and The Kalish's mission.

Enlist and manage volunteers for various duties.

Track workshop applications, communicate with applicants, and collaborate with the board to select workshop participants each year.

Manage travel and reimbursements for faculty and staff related to workshop activities.

Expected to run/attend the Kalish workshop each year. The director would be the face of the workshop.

Program Development:

Develop and coordinate additional programming throughout the year, including webinars and partnership opportunities.

Actively recruit participants for workshops and other programs.

Fundraising:

Develop and establish sustainable funding through grants and other sources to support Kalish programming.

Collaborate with the board to develop proposals and targets.

Administrative Duties:

Attend advisory board meetings as necessary and provide status reports.

Enlist and manage volunteers for various duties, including website updates, social media promotion, and external communications, including email.

Maintain the alumni database.

Work with the NPPF treasurer to ensure the financial health of The Kalish.

Community Engagement:

Collaborate with volunteers and partner organizations to enhance program outreach and effectiveness.

Qualifications

A passion for visual journalism, demonstrated by education and/or field experience.

A track record for fundraising and grant writing.

Proven experience in nonprofit management, event planning, or a related field.

A track record of impeccable organizational and leadership skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience with social media and website management.

Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders, including advisory board members, volunteers, and partners.

Familiarity with budgeting and financial management.
Education & Experience (prefered)

Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred); Bachelor’s in Journalism/Photojournalism is a plus.

Minimum of 5 years of experience with a nonprofit organization.

Experience working with advisory boards and coordinating large-scale events.

An understanding and appreciation of The Kalish mission.
Compensation
We will offer an initial $10K stipend annually and the Board will evaluate possible stipend increases as the organization grows.
