Bob Lynn
Retired Assistant Managing Editor/Graphics, The Virginian-Pilot​

​Bob Lynn is a former Assistant Managing Editor/Graphics at The Virginian-Pilot . He retired from the Pilot in August 1997, after serving as its photojournalism leader 17 years.
During that time the Pilot was recognized annually for its photo journalistic excellence in the Pictures of the Year competition, including an Angus McDougall Overall Excellence in Editing Award and three first place wins for Best Use of Pictures for large metropolitan newspapers.

Lynn came to Norfolk from the Charleston (WV) Gazette, where he was graphics editor. Prior to that, he was a reporter-photographer and staff photographer for the Los Angeles Times and the Cincinnati Enquirer. Lynn started his career in
1959 as a sports reporter for the Wilmington (NC) Morning Star.

Lynn graduated from Marshall University with a BA degree in journalism in 1959. He earned a master’s degree in journalism from Ohio University in 1979. In 1971, he was Ohio News Photographer of the Year and earned national recognition for his writing on nuclear electrical power. In 1988, he was editor of the 13th Pictures of the Year Annual. Lynn was named Photojournalist of the Year by Western Kentucky University’s Journalism Department in 1996. He received the NPPA’s Joseph Costa Award in 1997 and 2004, and the John Durniak Mentor Citation in 2003.

Lynn was an adjunct professor of photojournalism for Syracuse University for three years, including teaching a semester at the university’s London, England, campus. He is a regular member of the Northern Short Course. He has appeared at The American Press Institute and The Poynter Institute, been a POY judge, and been a member of the Flying Short Course, Missouri Workshop and Mountain Workshop. He has been a member of the Stan Kalish Picture Editing Workshop from its inspection in 1990. Lynn does consulting in the U.S. and overseas.
