Bruce Moyer
Former Deputy Director of Photography, Tampa Bay Times

Bruce Moyer was a repeat faculty member to The Kalish. His impact as a visual advocate and mentor had tremendous positive impact to veteran journalists and new picture editors. After a lifetime of service to the
photojournalism community, Bruce Moyer died from brain cancer in December 2013. He was 52.

Bruce Moyer was the deputy director of photography at the Tampa Bay Times for seven years and previously was a picture editor at the Hartford Courant for eight years.

Moyer won numerous awards in the annual Pictures of the Year International Competition, NPPA Best of Photojournalism and Society of
News Design contests. He was part of a team of picture editors and photographers at the Courant that won the Angus McDougall Overall Excellence in Editing Award in the Pictures of the Year International Competition for three consecutive years, something no other paper has done. He also was named “Newspaper picture editor of the Year” for three consecutive years in the NPPA’s contest.

Moyer’s wife, Suzette, was Director of Design and Graphics at the Courant when they were in Hartford. The paper was named as one of the Best-Designed Newspapers in the World in 2001 and again in 2004 in the Society for News Design contest.

Prior to the Courant, Moyer was visual team leader at The Sun in Bremerton, Washington, and a staff photographer at the Naples (FL) Daily News. He graduated from the Southeast Center for Photographic Studies in Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1982.
