John Rumbach

Co-Publisher and Editor, The Herald

Rumbach joined The Herald, a family-owned newspaper in Jasper, Indiana, in 1973 as a general assignment reporter/writer.

He was introduced to photography because the newspaper expected writers to take the pictures. When he was named managing editor, he hired a full-time photojournalist and took up picture editing because there wasn’t anyone else to do it.

Nine years later, Rumbach won first place in POY in the Newspaper Picture Editing, Individual Portfolio category. He won the award four more times. In 2008, he and his son Justin, today managing editor at The Herald, won first place in the Best of Photojournalism’s Newspaper Picture

Editor of the Year — Team.

The National Press Photographers Association named him Editor of the Year in 1988.

The Herald, a small community daily, has gained a reputation for quality documentary community photojournalism and has won numerous awards for picture use in POY and BOP.

Rumbach first joined the Kalish faculty in 1994 and remained on it through 2012. He was the director of the workshop from 1998 through 2001. He continues to serve on the advisory board.

Rumbach graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a BA in English. He and his wife Susan have four children.
