newspaper’s ambitious zoning effort, going from a one edition newspaper to a nine edition paper. He also supervised the redesign of the newspaper and the installation of a new publishing system.

He holds a bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Cincinnati but has no formal training in journalism whatsoever.

Before moving to Memphis, Sines was managing editor at The Spokesman-Review where he supervised the redesign of the newspaper in 1994.

Since then, the newspaper has been named one of the best designed newspapers in the world four times by the Society for News Design. In 2000, the newspaper won a gold medal and earned the judges special recognition for its outstanding photojournalism. Sines considers himself a creative thinker though industry experts never call on him for advice.

Six times during his tenure in Spokane, The Spokesman-Review won the Best Use of Pictures category in the Pictures of the Year contest. Sines has twice won the Individual Picture Editing Portfolio category. In 2000, The Spokesman-Review won the Angus McDougall award for overall excellence in picture editing. He claims to have a sophisticated artistic vision although he has never seen a foreign film or traveled to Europe.

Twice he’s judged the West Valley High School Camera Club Contest and he’s been a speaker at the Evergreen Middle School Career Day.

Sines has been married to the same pretty girl, Teresa, for 33 years. They have three children; Jack, Ben and Abby.
